Vita Beata – Sacred Music & Faith in a Capitalist World

The relationship between art and faith has always been a complicated one. Artists have approached sacred art in various ways, often putting them in conflict with the very beliefs they were representing. Artists like Caravaggio and composers like Mozart produced iconic sacred works, and yet also produced wholly secular and profane works. How is that relationship viewed nowadays in a contemporary setting? How can a contemporary artist navigate this delicate territory?
Using his Cantata Vita Beatae Mariae Virginis (2023) as a point of reference, composer Alexander Vella Gregory explores themes of faith and aesthetics within a contemporary context. He will outline the basic ideas that inspire him, the research that goes into the compositional process, and his personal experiences.
