‘A Taste of Maltese History’: An Illustrated Talk by Liam Gauci from Heritage Malta

History and food lovers are invited to this free library event with Liam Gauci, a Maltese historian and author, whose work has helped uncover Malta’s fascinating maritime past through the fragile pages of forgotten archives.

In this illustrated talk, which will be given in English, the author will include selected readings from his published works, focusing on love letters from Malta, alongside reflections on Malta’s maritime and culinary past. His books bring to light the world of Maltese corsairs – men who sailed under letters of marque and whose lives were entwined with empire, trade, and survival.

As a Maltese maritime historian, the author’s research explores the intersection of food, war, and seafaring in the Mediterranean. His most recent book, ‘Morte o Fortuna: Corsairs in Malta 1747 – 1798’ (BDL Books, 2024), follows in the wake of his acclaimed earlier study, ‘In the Name of the Prince’, cementing his reputation as a leading voice on 18th-century Maltese corsairs and naval trade.
